Vidya gaming status
There a few things that are starting to dawn upon me that show that I should really reconsider from playing video games as a hobby anymore. This will be a quick post read because there isn’t much to say except list through the reasons for why I gaming suspend my gaming going forward till I update my desktop’s hardware which, for the last three to four years, I have been postponing.
This also means that, until I find a job that allows me to come home before six o’clock in the afternoon, I won’t be able to do much late night gaming that goes into the wee hours of the morning.
So here’s the breakdown of why all of this is going to be the case in the near future.
Work
I have a job now that simply does not allow me to get out early anymore. So, honestly, gaming between the usual hours of 19:00 to 22:00 is not going to be viable anymore. This is going to be an ongoing thing for, what I estimate will be, a year starting since last June since I got hired at the current job.
Hardware limitations
I never thought I’d see this but it seems that even Minecraft, going from version 1.9.4 onward, is not playing nice with my system. With framerates going at around 40 or less, the game is now sluggish and I cannot figure out what could better optimize the game to run on my system at the optimal settings that I’m accustomed to with Minecraft. So I’ve decided to no longer continue playing it till I upgrade my system.
Not only that, but also there are some titles that I’ve come to accumulate that require a, not necessarily beefy but, up-to-date hardware configuration of which I don’t exactly have in mind to update just yet. I’m keeping an eye on the news and so far Intel’s changes to their changes to their production strategy (namely their new “tick-tock-optimize” scheduling and development process); and it seems that I’ll be jumping on to finally start making motions to update once their new Enthusiast lineup of 10nm process CPUs debut into the market.
Education
I have a few projects that involve self-studying that involve learning to program with Python and also the TCP/IP stack with some UNIX/Linux instruction by a friend here and there that I have to get on to. This is important because I’ll probably likely need it in the future jobs that I’ll be applying for in the near future and hope to have some stuff to show for my endeavors soon.
Non-gaming pet projects
I have been interested in doing some voice recording for some time and have been interested in reading a few pieces of literary works (such as Tolstoy’s War and Peace and the infamus Secure. Protect. Contain science fiction entries). Both take some considerable amount of time to look into reading carefully.
Learning about non-video games
Card games, board games (like Go), and especially table-top RPG are starting to take my interest and so I would like to explore more and more into what goes into these types of games as far as group management, writing, game designing and play.
For Card games like poker, baccarat, and such - along with maybe learning a bit about magic tricks with cards, would be nice to get into.
Overall…
My interest in video games is only as good as the hardware and time can allow me to enjoy at whim. So once either becomes unavailable, I’d say, for me, it’s time to call it quits.
There are other reasons not mentioned here that are personal that I have to attend to and focus on that will take up my time. It’s been a blast these last eight to ten years of playing video games - killing off whatever youth I have on video games.
And along the way, I will appreciate the blood, sweat, stink, and tears of dealing with people made me laugh, cry (of laughter), and leave me generally confused as to their dietary, hygiene, and overall meta-cognitive, or lack therefore, forms of thinking (if ever in some cases).
Ta-ta for now.
Update 11/14/16: I went back to video games anyway because, boredom.
